About Kolkata

Kolkata, formerly known as Calcutta, is the capital city of West Bengal and one of India's most historically and culturally rich cities. Known for its colonial architecture, vibrant arts scene, and literary heritage, Kolkata has long been a center of intellectual and cultural life in India. Iconic landmarks such as the Howrah Bridge, Victoria Memorial, and Dakshineswar Kali Temple reflect the city’s unique blend of tradition and modernity. Kolkata is also home to the famous Durga Puja festival, which is celebrated with great fervor and draws visitors from around the world. The city boasts a strong educational ecosystem, with several renowned institutions in various fields. The University of Calcutta, one of the oldest in India, offers a wide range of undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs and is well-known for its academic and research excellence. Kolkata is also home to prestigious institutions like Jadavpur University, Presidency University, and the Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), which are recognized for their contributions to research and higher education. The city’s colleges, such as St. Xavier’s College and Loreto College, are also highly regarded. Kolkata is a hub for students pursuing education in the fields of literature, science, technology, law, and the arts, drawing scholars from across the country. Kolkata experiences a tropical wet and dry climate. Summers, from March to June, can be extremely hot and humid, with temperatures often reaching up to 40°C (104°F). The monsoon season, from June to September, brings heavy rainfall, which helps cool the temperatures but can also cause occasional flooding. Winters, from December to February, are mild and comfortable, with temperatures ranging from 10°C to 20°C (50°F to 68°F), making it the most pleasant time of the year. Kolkata’s warm climate, coupled with its rich educational and cultural offerings, makes it an attractive destination for students and professionals alike.
