About Chandigarh

Chandigarh, popularly known as "The City Beautiful," is a distinctive union territory in northern India and serves as the joint capital of Punjab and Haryana. Situated at the base of the Shivalik hills, it is bordered by Haryana on the east and Punjab on the other three sides. The city lies approximately 260 km (162 miles) northwest of New Delhi and 229 km (143 miles) southeast of Amritsar.

A Model of Urban Planning and Architecture

Following India's independence, Chandigarh was envisioned as a modern and progressive city. The renowned Swiss-French architect Le Corbusier developed its master plan, drawing inspiration from earlier designs by American planner Albert Mayer and Polish architect Maciej Nowicki. The city is structured into a grid-like layout with wide avenues and organized sectors. A key highlight of its architectural brilliance is the Capitol Complex, which houses the High Court, Secretariat, and Legislative Assembly. This landmark was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2016.

Cultural and Natural Attractions

Chandigarh seamlessly blends cultural vibrancy with natural charm. The famous Rock Garden features sculptures crafted from industrial and urban waste, showcasing creative recycling. Sukhna Lake, a tranquil retreat, offers boating and relaxation opportunities. Meanwhile, the Zakir Hussain Rose Garden, the largest of its kind in Asia, is home to an extensive variety of roses.

High Standard of Living and Modern Infrastructure

With one of the highest per capita incomes in India, Chandigarh consistently ranks among the country's best cities in terms of quality of life and human development. Its well-planned infrastructure, ample greenery, and focus on cleanliness make it one of the most livable urban centers. In 2015, a survey by LG Electronics declared it the happiest city in India.

An Educational and Innovation Hub

The city is home to numerous prestigious educational institutions and research centers, fostering a culture of knowledge and technological advancement. These institutions contribute to Chandigarh’s reputation as a center of learning and innovation.
