General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM)

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants seeking admission to the General Nursing and Midwifery (GNM) programme must meet one of the following eligibility requirements:

• Completed 10+2 with English as a compulsory subject and secured at least 40% aggregate marks from a recognized education board. Candidates from State Open Schools and the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) are also eligible. Preference is given to students with a science background.
• Completed 10+2 with English and obtained a minimum of 40% marks in the Vocational ANM programme from an institution recognized by the Indian Nursing Council (INC).
• Completed 10+2 with English and secured 40% marks in the Vocational Health Care Science stream from a recognized CBSE, State, or Central Board.
• Candidates who are Registered Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANM) with passing marks are also eligible.

Eligibility for International Students

Foreign applicants must obtain an equivalency certificate for their 12th-grade qualification from the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), New Delhi. The respective institution and State Nursing Council will verify that the educational qualifications meet the prescribed eligibility standards.

Reservation Policy

Admissions follow the reservation guidelines prescribed by the Indian Nursing Council and the respective State Government.

• Persons with Disabilities (PwD): A 3% reservation is available for candidates with 40%–50% locomotor disability affecting the lower limbs, subject to medical assessment by an authorized committee and fulfillment of all other eligibility conditions.
• SC/ST Candidates: Eligible candidates receive a 5% relaxation in the minimum qualifying marks.
• State Government Reservations: Additional reservations are applicable according to prevailing State Government regulations.

Note: Reservations are applicable only within the total number of seats approved by the Indian Nursing Council (INC).

Admission Guidelines

• Admissions are conducted once every academic year.
• Applicants must be medically fit as per institutional requirements.
• The minimum age for admission is 17 years as of 31 December of the admission year.
• The maximum age is 35 years.
• There is no upper age limit for ANM and LHV candidates.

Examination Pattern

Course Curriculum

The programme is divided into four academic phases:

• First Year
• Second Year
• Third Year – Part I
• Third Year – Part II (School Examination)

The curriculum combines classroom learning, practical laboratory sessions, and extensive clinical training to develop professional nursing skills.

Examination & Assessment

• Council examinations are conducted at the end of each academic year.
• Students must secure at least 50% marks separately in both theory and practical examinations to pass.
• Regular class tests and internal assessments are conducted throughout the programme to monitor academic performance.
• Internal assessment scores are submitted to the Nursing Council for both theory and practical components.
• A model examination is conducted before the final council examination to help students prepare effectively.
